This is correct. Will be gathering more information about this. Seems 2 years ago, right after the smart meters were installed here, 4 people hard huge, up to FOUR TIMES increase in consumption. They could not afford the bills, in the hundreds of dollars (for a small home with two people in them).
Calls to Hydro One got no where. Pay up or get cut off, was the tone. These people had no choice but to sell and leave.
I'll be getting more info on this as well as talking with the current owners in the next few days.
Also, my friend Dave said he brought up this mess while getting his hair cut. A storm erupted in the barber shop as the owner complained that this winter his bill went from $80 per month to over $300. Same with the other stores in the building. Even people there getting hair cuts weighed in with similar complaints.
Will investigate this more too.
The day mine was installed, 3 light bulbs burnt out. I demanded a service call and when the guy showed up, it turns out the installer had actually done a sloppy job and created some sort of short circuit. Don't trust H1.

ReplyDeleteBrian, even a drop is evidence they are not working. If you can get bills together and show the drop. Ideally we need daily recordings, which you have to get from H1, in electronic format (tab delimited text file) then I can run an analysis on the data to see if there was a real change when the meter went into effect.

We received a bill in February for $3,763.66, then next 2 bills averaging $450, then billing dated April 30 fell to $260.62. We had H1 test our meter, and wondered if that was the cause of the drastic drop. During the year 2009, our meter was read only 3 times, with all other bills done on an estimated reading. On a print-out received from H1 showing our billing records, our meter reading was estimated on October 15, but for some reason was read on October 16. The billing was issued based on the estimate. Estimated reading - 2344 KWH - actual reading 24,196 KWH (with notation beside it DO NOT BILL). Billing for November continued on the estimated reading, indicating usage at 365 KWH, Dec. 1 - estimate 392 KWH, Jan 13/10 estimate 460 KWH, and then the very large one in February- actual reading 28576 KWH.
ReplyDeleteWe had a Hydro One smart meter installed and operating Nov. 2011. We use this place as an occasional holiday home. No one in home from Sept/2011 to Dec 10/2011. Nov/2011 useage compared to Nov/ 2010 was 5 times higher. No renters. Empty house. We have a gas furnace and water heater, reduce furnace to 15C. Our useage was 3x higher than neighbors who live at the complex permanently and run a space heater 24/7. Called Hydro One many times to ask. Told meter is perfect and I'm to blame. I must be doing something differently. I am. New thermal doors and windows installed, new energy star fridge, stove and washing machine, plus new screen door.

In October of 2010 we received a $1,000 bill we called and were told that the bill is a catch up from all the estimated bills and that our smart meter was not working. They did after many months send someone out to replace. We are now getting actual readings and are bills have been better
